Round and About - Chasseneuil-Sur-Bonnieure - Church

It is commonly accepted in most 18th century documents, the name of Chasseneuil comes from the Latin "cassanoîalos" meaning  'glade of oaks'.  There are a couple of other theories though!   The Bonnieure causes less of a problem, as it means "good waters".

The church  of St Saturnin  in Chasseneuil-sur-Bonnieure is dated from the eleventh and twelfth centuries.

In 2000, work was interrupted by the discovery of archaeological remains. Valuables were collected from the sarcophagi and scientifically studied.

The stained glass windows, dating from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, were restored in 2007. The complete restoration of the church, interior and exterior, took place in 2005 and 2006.

The inauguration of the renovated church took place on 16 December 2007.

  15. Hi Anne, Maybe you can see the church for yourself in the not too distant future!
It has been a pretty horrible day trying to sort things out, tomorrow will be no better. It is Nigel's birthday as well:-( We will have to celebrate next week but I suspect this is going to take months to sort out. Diane

  17. Joan not only is it amazing how long these buildings have lasted. but some of the very large ones amaze me how they were built. How did they lift massive stones into arches way, way up to the top!! Diane

  18. Diane, do you miss France or are you happy to be back in England for a while? I would think you must miss the southern hemisphere and its warmer climate. In Southern California it is warm, with chilly nights but November and December are really the hardest months for me. I am not going to Hawaii for the holidays this year (only my son is) so it is going to be even harder for me.

  19. I love the fact that you get out and about and see all these places - when we are a bit less busy with the renovation that is something I am hoping we will have more time for. How's blighty treating you?xx

  20. Nadege I miss France more than I can say. As for the Southern hemisphere, I would be happy to be in Africa from November until March, and then April until October in France!! Can't afford it though!!!!!!! Diane

  21. Hi Roz, when I have time I will drop you an email. I am struggling to keep up with all. Nigel's aunt passed away on Monday and Nigel is Executor. He has just escaped another redundancy so he is under the whip. I am trying to help where possible. The flat is a nightmare with paper work going back to year dot :-( Diane
