This, That and the Other!!

I am sorry not to be very good about blogging at the moment; I just do not feel 100%, but really hope to be back to normal health very soon!

On Sunday, the nearby village of Vitrac held its annual Bric-a-Brac (car boot sale).  The early autumn is the traditional time for these events and there will be one every week at villages in the area for the next 4-6 weeks.

This was my fourth year as a participant, but apart from the second year when I sold almost everything, the rest have not been very successful from the moneymaking viewpoint!  Nevertheless, it is good for us to be seen to be joining in with the community activities. Early set-up of one's stand is essential and we had to be up at 05h00! By the time we arrived on site at 06h30 (in the dark!), we were almost the last there!!  It was very chilly while we set up our stand, as the village is in a steep valley, and it seemed to take an age for the sun to lift its head over the trees to warm us up. A few low clouds hindered the process.  Later in the day, we were putting up sun umbrellas to cool off!

The event was very popular with sellers; we were told there were 110 stands, each local resident with an allocated 4 metres of frontage free. A long walk around! The bar and restaurant tent did a roaring trade all day!
The pretty bridge leading into the village of Vitrac-St-Vincent.
This side view of the same bridge was taken close  to where we had our Bric-a-Brac stand.
Our little 4 metre stand is behind the gentleman in the red and black striped shirt, Nigel is standing on the left, looking cold! You can see  by the clothing that it was still quite cool when I took these photos.
The early morning mist still lifting down the length of the field.
Anything goes, crockery, books, a steering wheel and even an old radio, but also loads of what we thought was junk!
I loved these ships that were for sale, particularly the ones at the bottom on the left; the sails were made from sea shells.
Who could resist the cuddly teddy bear?

We returned home exhausted at about 7 p.m. with very little cash to show for our long day's efforts, but a lovely sunset did greet us on arrival.   Also these bright little moths were around to say goodnight to two very weary people.

Thanks to Susan this has been identified as Essex Emerald Thetidia smaragdaria,
This has been confirmed as
Opisthograptis Luteolata  or Brimstone; it was actually quite yellow, although it looks green here.

  1. I love sales such as these. We even went to a few when we were in Provence, knowing of course that most of it wouldn't fit in our suitcase.

Hope you continue to feel better. I'm not a very patient person, but sometimes it takes time.

That is the worst of seeing things you want when you are from another country, how do you get it back! We came back from Australia with a huge didgeridoo that caused many problems along the way and then on final touch down they could not find it! We hung around for a couple of hours before they eventually came up with it!! Take care Diane

  2. Hello Diane:
We cannot resist a good rummage so this event would have been exactly suited to us. But, such an early start....not sure that we could have managed that and so, surely, the best bargains would have been missed by us.

These kinds of events do, as you say, bring communities together so it is very good to take part. Whether it is a good financial prospect is secondary, although a little more euros to show for your efforts might well have come in handy!

  3. Hi Diane, I'm glad you felt up to doing the vide-grenier again. I love these events and would really like to have a stall myself some time. If we had not had to cut our holiday short this time we would have been able to come over and see your stall !! Did you make and sell any of your lovely jewellery this year?

    1. Jean two years ago I was totally cleaned out in all the jewellery I had made. Last year was not good, but then it rained most of the day and many people did not even bother to go. This year I think I sold 3 pairs of earrings out of a whole board covered in earrings and necklaces - you just never know!!!! Hope all is well with you 3 :-) Diane

  11. Hi Diane,
Wish I could give you a magic potion to make you well, but I'm pleased you feel well enough to give us yet another brilliant blog :) We were definitely going to Vitrac last Sunday, but we had to deliver Maz to her new owners in North Dordogne - my eyes leaked all the way home! The Imprevu has started here in Montemboeuf, so not much sleep for us this weekend. Please get well soon, Jacky xx

I look just fine, I just don't feel it, so apart from Nigel and all my blogging friends I don't get much sympathy!! Thanks goodness for all my virtual friends :-)
Sorry about Maz, why the move, lack of space? At least you know she has a good home, when we moved to the UK I had to have our beagle put to sleep. Too elderly to travel and he would never have settled with any one else. I could hardly see to drive home that day. If you need a break from the noise you know where we are. See you soon, take care Diane

  13. So sorry to read you are still not up to par..I know shingles take quite a time to get rid of..and it is no laughing matter. They are brutal..I give you credit for doing the sale..and it had to be tiring. Anytime we do craft fairs/shows, it is so exhausting. Setting up/taking down/lugging the stuff that didn't sell back home..just a long day. I think the best part is meeting people and chatting with them..Looks like it was a lovely sale..Take care Diane and go slow..Sending you love and blessings/Carolyn/Rosebud

  21. Sorry to hear you are still feeling under the weather, Diane. I'm still trying to pluck up courage to take a stall at one of these events. I'll have to set myself a time limit and just do it!

We're always amazed at the 'junk' which is on offer. Yours looks like a very upmarket affair; the doll (photo 7) still has two arms and the teddy looks as if he's been spruced up for the occasion, unlike the 'armless' and grubby offerings we usually see!
Do get well soon. And don't apologise re your blogging - it's always a delight to read!

  23. I'm glad you were able to participate in the bric-a-brac sale. Here, such sales are often held in a vacant parking lot, such as a drive-in movie theater, and are called "flea markets" (which is a much less endearing term). I'm sorry the shingles are still affecting you so badly. I've attached a note to my next doctor's appointment slip to take the shingles vaccine!

  50. Diane, I enjoy this kind of activities very much. It is so much fun than shopping at the supermarket. I think I'll go to those little jars. I've once lived in New Zealand for a year many many years ago and had went to many garage sales. Most joyous thing to do apart of life. How I wish we have it here as well. Have fun!

    1. Kristy perhaps you should get a few people together and suggest that you start them there, why not? I am sure you would be able to sell things you don't need any more. There is always somebody who wants what you do not!! Have a great weekend Diane

  52. I used to love going to the car boot sales in the UK but in France it seems everything has a (high) price, the logic being that if someone wants to buy it it must be worth something, Occasionally you get English speakers selling and usually thats good for getting books, worth looking on the bottom of water jugs (the ones for whisky) and ash trays for a windmill, they are quite collectable and command a high price.

    1. Paul and Roz, I have never seen anything collectable, it mostly looks like junk to me. We found people wanted things for nothing this year, they were not even prepared to spend a sensible price!!! Have a good Sunday Diane

  53. I hope you are feeling a bit better Diane and I really did enjoy this post. I know you prefer my happier posts so you might want to avoid the one that is going up tomorrow (thought I should give you fair warning!). Take care of you, A. -x-

    1. Froggy thanks for the warning. I am so exhausted at the moment, so much 'stuff' from the garden, and trying to get three new rooms painted over the weekend so that the carpenters can get the floor down next week, and the plumber can put in the radiators. I need happy things to keep me going :-)) Have a good day tomorrow Diane xx

  54. I like old sales like this and usually look for old books and postcards – the old French things though are different from the old US things I think but both are fun to look at. I hope you feel better very soon as it’s not fun to be in the sick list. Meilleure santé!
