Around the garden in May

It is so dry here that the garden is struggling, but I am managing to water just enough to keep most things alive.  As I mentioned previously, the large cedar tree is looking as if it has seen better days, so I will be surprised if it recovers.   We did have 3mm of rain on Thursday night, the first for ages, and another 2mm last night; not very much, but every little bit helps.  I have taken a few photos during the month, so here is an update.
This rose is one that I grew from a cutting from our UK garden. The rose was already in place when we bought the house, so I have no idea which variety it is. The perfume is very strong.

Chive from the herb garden.
Sage
The last picking of cherries from our tree.
Two different kinds of Globe Artichoke.

My first courgettes (zucchini); a yellow variety.
Young grapes.
Three red hot chillies and two peppers.
The potatoes are looking good despite the lack of water.
Two aubergine (eggplant);on the right chard and onions.
Jerusalem Artichoke (Topinambour) on the right, tomatoes behind and young pumpkin plants sheltering under the tiles, they need protection from the very hot sun.
Tomatoes, potatoes and grapes are all sprayed with copper sulphate to prevent blight; you can see the blue tinge here.
You can see how my poor gardenia is struggling due to lack of water. There are many flowers, but they are very dry looking, small and not opening properly.

Please note that I am off to the UK next week for 8 days to celebrate my father-in-law's 90th birthday. On my return to France, I have visitors for most of June.  I will do as many posts as possible, but I may not have time to visit everyone.  You will not be forgotten and I will try to keep up when I can.
Thank you one and all for all your kind comments; I really do appreciate your visits.

  3. I do hope the weather gets wetter soon for it'd be a pity for your lovely garden not to bloom at its fullest. That rose blossom looks like it has a heavenly fragrance! :)

  4. Wow! We have had too much rain, and only recently it has slowed down enough for me to plant seedlings. Only my fava are thriving. My roses have not bloomed yet. Do pick and cook your artichokes or they'll be too tough when you return. Happy Birthday to the lucky 90nth!

  14. Kristy I am so lost with the very tiny garden we have in the UK, certainly no room to grow much other than the rose! I love my vegetable garden and enjoy the results though this year I may not have as much to eat from it as usual!! Diane

  15. Thanks Mary for your kind comments, I do miss you all though when I am short of time but c'est la vie! I will pop in when I have the time. Take care Diane

  16. Steve I feel as if I am behind as I have been so busy this year. I am also always wary of a May frost which we get so often. This year has just been too hot and dry though. Hopefully when I get back from the UK, although I have visitors, I can get a few more plants into the garden. Have a good day. Diane

  17. Hi Diane, the flowers and herbs looks stunning! Funny I never think of it being dry enough in Europe to have you thinking of losing plants due to drought! I always think of it as a place of too much rain! Have a good one!

  18. Hi Diane .. your garden looks fantastic to me .. :-) :-) you are certainly a busy bee !! Hope that we can catch up with each other when you are over .. Of course we understand how it is when we get busy , family etc , trips too.. look forward to reading all that you do , xoxo Take care Anne

  19. Liesl, you are right so far as England is concerned but even they have had very little rain this year. Here in France we have one of the sunniest places other than the South of France. I quote "Its mild climate - 2,250 hours of sunshine per year". This year though is particularly dry. Take care, Diane

  20. Anne just sent you an email! The days are going to be frantic while I am in the UK, there is something on I think everyday other than Sunday at the moment. That will probably also change though. Will phone if I get a chance. Have a good weekend, guess Arnie is in Spain:-( Diane xx

  21. The pictures are wonderful! Winter seemed to go on for SO long here in Minnesota that just now the earth seems to be full of color like that. So glad to see the rest of the world full of life like that!

Enjoy yourself while you're away. Hope you have a lovely time with your friends!

  25. Dianne thanks for greeting. It is a long drive so I will keep as safe as possible. I am driving in preference to flying so I can bring things back with me. Have a good Sunday. Diane

  27. Oh!
What a wonderful color, this rose!
I can nearly smell its perfume!!
    Your garden is very promising!
But you must be under water restrictions, I guess?!!
We have little rain and the problems are limit here, a few kms from here in the Gers, it is already catastrophic!
Have safe trip back to the UK and fun with the family and friends!
    Love,

  28. Hi Diane, for some reason I thought I had already commented here but no, luckily I called by to take what I thought was a second look at your garden to compare to ours. It must just be because of our recent email conversation that I thought this. your tomatoes are way ahead of ours as were your cherries!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hi Noushka there are no restrictions at the moment but by the time I get back I fully expect them to be in place! I have never seen the garden so dry, it really is very serious. I am using all the water from the kitchen on the pot plants and even putting a bucket in the shower to catch what I can. Take care Diane xx

    ReplyDelete
  30. Linda I agree the cherries seem to be well ahead of you but the only reason the tomatoes are, is a friend gave them to me just after arrival. He had surplus from his greenhouse!! The problem now is keeping them alive! Diane x

  31. What beautiful flowers, fruit and vegetable you have from your garden Diane! I can say that you have better weather at your place than here, just looking at your great pictures. I just like your garden, no matter what! Cheers!!!

  32. Your garden is gorgeous! As always, an enjoyable photo journey. I wish you have a lovely time with your family and friends!

    ReplyDelete
  33. michelangelo it depends what you think is better weather! No rain to speak of since the end of March, the farmers are in big trouble. I just hope I can keep the garden alive. The weather forecast does not even think about rain for the next 10 days and this will probably continue.!! Diane

  34. Thanks Olga I hope the journey goes well, there and back again. I am sure I will have fun with visitors here afterwards. Take care Diane

  35. Diane I am always so jealous of your large garden. All those beautiful veggies are amazing. I just posted some of the fruit from my yard, I wish I could grow some vegetables too. Just never had luck down here in Florida. I do like that I always have my herbs growing year round though...well pretty much everything grows year round :D

I love that rose, apricot color roses has always been a favorite of mine and extra special the perfume is strong!

Have a nice trip and happy birthday to your FIL.

  36. Hi Diane, thanks for another lovely snapshot of your life in France, the garden is looking great despite lack of rain (Charente may get a drop on Thursday!!).

It looks as though I have the same rose here in my garden in Dorset - I believe it's called Whiskey Mac (that takes me back!!) but will double check later. Have a good trip and best wishes to the Birthday Boy.

  40. Lyndsey, I have always managed to grow good vegetables so long as I have had the room. The house we are in at the moment in the UK is very small and outside is all paved other than one small bed down the side. I have tried container growing but that does not work for me!!
I also love that rose, the perfume is incredible. Diane

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jacky thanks for the info, Whiskey Mac sounds a good name to me. I just looked at the Meteo and yes it says possible rain on Thursday, that is the day I will be driving back so I will never know if it rains here!!
