I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas!

In fact this is the last thing we are dreaming of!!!  On Christmas Day, we are planning to drive to my father-in-law's house, 40 miles (65 km) from us and then take him out to lunch in a nearby town.  We have prebooked our menu, so hopefully we will be able to get there on the snowy roads.

You can see for yourself what it looks like at the moment around our home here in the UK.

I am sure you are all saying it is beautiful and I have to agree that the photos are picturesque.  It is just not such fun out driving or walking :-)

  3. The roads will be clear for your Christmas visit. I promise not to say how beautiful it all looks and I'll make no reference to winter wonderland or angel's dust or fairy land. Stay warm and dry and drive safely. All will be well. Blessings...Mary

  4. Mary I will take your word for it :) Thanks for not mentioning all the rest of it LOL. Take care, thanks, Diane

  5. It looks beautiful Diane! We got to see a White Christmas last year when we went to Michigan. My daughter's first time seeing snow, so we had fun.

  6. Hi Diane: I know what your talking about, I grew up down south in Patagonia and winters were lovely but so annoying to be trapped in your house when snow won't let you out. Hope you make to your father in law's and have a great Christmas, thanks for visiting my blog, let¡s keep in touch!

  7. Lyndsey I would love it if I could just sit and look at it, or even just go out and play with children for a short time, but driving is simply NOT fun!! Diane

  8. Pamela will certainly keep in touch. Glad you understand the situation. I certainly hope we will make it to my father-in-laws or it is going to be a miserable Christmas..... Diane

  9. Be careful out there. I would hate to drive in weather like that. Have a safe and happy holiday with the relatives.

  10. Hi Diane, I know exactly what you mean! It is lovely to look out at but awful when you have to drive somewhere through it. It has been a nightmare trying to get to work in Oxfordshire from Reading and back this week. I hope everything works out really well for you though. Fingers well and truly crossed! x

  11. yes, well, I won't say it because I can see that it must be quite difficult getting around in those conditions - (i have a desire to experience a white Christmas just once in my life) - Season's greetings to you Diane - and I hope you make it to Christmas lunch ... :)

  12. So true it is pretty to look at, but no thanks. Good thing it doesn't look like you got much.

  13. Thanks Becca, driving is no fun, but we hope that there will be no more snow and at least the main roads will be salted. You also have a Happy Holiday with your family. Take care. Diane

  14. Happy Frog and I, that must be the worst trip ever. Reading can be a nightmare to drive in at rush hour time anyway!!! We hope and pray that there will be no more snow! Diane

  15. Fingers crossed for your drive on the 25th but still - it does look beautiful! Greetings from a very grey and rainy Provence and Meryy Christmas!

  16. Thanks Graham for not saying it LOL. My desire in life is to be in France from April until October and then the rest of the time somewhere south of the equator in Africa. It will never happen unless I win the lottery :) Thanks for all your comments during the year and yes, season's greetings to you as well. As you don't drink alcohal can I still say Cheers? Diane

  17. Gaelyn we have not had as much as some people further North, but the problem is getting out of the estate. Once on the main roads which are salted then it is not too bad. When we go to Nigel's father normally we drive over the downs, as things are at present this would not be a good idea. Diane

  18. Cuisine de Provence I cannot disagree that it looks beautiful but..... Thanks for the visit, hope you have a good Christmas. Love your blog. Diane

  19. Yikes, can they clear the roads - or is it still snowing?
Good luck, and Merry Christmas where ever you are.

  20. We lived in Colorado for 15 years so I know how much trouble the snow can cause, it is no fun to drive in. Now that we live in New Mexico, we get snow but it never sticks around for very long. We seldom have to shovel the snow.

Have a very Merry Christmas, and be safe!

    Linda

  23. Mya once off the estate I hope that the roads are salted. What ever Chistmas Day is not going to be easy. Neither Nigel or I are feeling very well, Nigel has been off work for 2 weeks with bronchitis and I feel like I have a bad cold coming on:( HAPPY HOLIDAYS. Diane

Merci pour ces belles images qui ne durent qu'un temps!

  29. It's about that snowy here, but we are set up to expect to move about in it. I joke about my "studded snow sneakers" on my winter car, but the snow tires are on and I'll swim through 6" of snow without a thought, plowed or not. I shudder reading about the stoppage at Heathrow! I do hope that you make it to your father in law's house successfully, and I'm wishing a very Merry Christmas to you and Nigel!

    Fondly,
    Marjie

  30. I really do want a white Christmas and am a little jealous of the snow you have had... if not the roads and slippery walks. I hope you have a great holiday!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. You have to make the best of this snowy weather. Drive carefully and just enjoy the company and the meal.
    Have a very merry Christmas!

  32. I agree with you, Diane. It might look pretty but that tightening of the stomach I get when I look out and see that MORE snow has fallen to make my journey to work dangerous and positively miserable. My poor dad has hardly been out of his house in a month. His road is far too slippery for him to attempt driving and I was HORRIFIED when I found out the other day that he had walked round to his local shops in the snow. A fall at his age could finish him off but I suppose he just got so fed up with being indoors and having to rely on me to struggle round to him with his shopping.

I do hope you have a wonderful day in spite of the weather. Thank you for all your lovely comments on my blog and all the great posts, recipes and ideas on yours. You are a great blog friend !! Jean xx

I whish You and your Family a Peaceful Christmas and Happy New Year!

  35. Noushka, I also hope we make it but Nigel is still not feeling well and now I have caught the bug from him!! The best plan would be to just stay in bed but I don't think this will happen!! Really not looking forward to Christmas Day at all at this stage :( Hope you have a good one. Diane

  36. Merci lejardinelucie. Malheureusement Nigel et moi sommes pas bien avec la grippe. Cela va être un Noël difficile ! Joyeux Noël à vous. Diane

  37. Marjie I think they have said this is the coldest winter in 45 years. I remeber my father used to have snow chains on his car in winter when I was a child but I have not seen them here in years. We could certainly do with them now. The problem now is the snow is compacting on pavements and unsalted roads and it is like an ice rink!! Nigel has been off work for two weeks with bronchits and is still not well now I have also gone down with flu so I think this Christmas is not going to be the happiest of days. Hope that you all, and of course Thor, have a good one. Best wishes from us both xx

  38. lostpastremembered so far nothing is going as planned, we both feel unwell, Nigel with bronchitis and me with flu so Chritmas day is not going to be a particularly happy one. Whatever I hope that you have a good one and I hope that 2011 will be a healthy one for us all. Best wishes Diane

  39. Nadege, the roads should be OK once off the estate, but we will have another problem with unsalted roads when we get to the other end. To add to it we are both down with flu bugs and quite honestly we do not feel like going anywhere!!! Hope all is well with you and that you have a great Christmas an New Year. Take care. Diane

  40. Thanks Jean for your lovely comments. Nigel's father is the same, he has hardly been out, I also have heart attacks when he says he has been down to the town, he turns 90 next May! Broken bones do not heal well at that age.
We plan on going tomorrow, but we will have to stay well clear of Dad as we are both well under the weather, Nigel with lingering bronchitis and me with flu!! Thank goodness we are going out to lunch as I could not have faced cooking!! I suspect the next week (Nigel's office is closed between Chistmas and New Year) we will both be VERY lazy, bed looks very inviting. Have a good weekend and take care. Diane

  46. Pam I hope your snow does not cause you too many problems. I have to admit we wish we had not planned to go anywhere, especially as we are both not feeling well on top of everything!! Hope you have a great day. Diane

  58. JM it was cold! As we were both not well it was not the best Christmas we have ever had. Maybe we will feel better and make up for it at New Year :) Hope though that you had a great day. Diane

  59. It is very picturesque but I understand not wanting to drive in it. Fortunately I missed the flight cancellations affecting Europe when I returned home from the east :-) Hope you are having a wonderful Christmas season.

  61. Yes, Diane, we follow closely what's going on with the weather in the UK!
We suffered a -7°C the previous night and I remained, as you will discover on my blog for 3 hours by that temperature plus "wind chill"!! in wait to get some pics of wild animals!
Fingers and toes were numb and ached badly when the blood returned!!!
    but it was worth it!
Maybe I'll try again, if I feel brave enough to get myself back in this situation!!
Hope you and Nigel are better and spent a great time with your families!
    Keep well and warm
    Cheers!!

  63. Noushka, hpe that you have warmed up now, it is certainly a bit better here but grey, damp and cool, not my favourite weather!! Diane xx

  64. Vagabonde, the snow is beautiful to look at, but as far as I am concerned that is where it ends!! Yes it is a bit warmer now but there is still snow lying around in places. Diane
