Around my Garden - Part 51

Having lost several days to extreme toothache, my blog has been somewhat neglected. I have nevertheless been trying to keep up with the blogs that I like to follow. I am back off to the dentist yet again in a couple of hours, and after some very sleepless nights for me, I hope some pain relief will be found!

I thought these few pictures may not only cheer me up, but you as well.

Apple blossom
Bluebells- they are very late this year!
The start of the cherries.  I hope that this year there will be no massive hailstorms to damage the fruit.  With luck, they will be ripening and ready for when Nigel returns at the end of May. See last years storm.
Quince flower, above and below.  These will only be ready in September, but then I will be very busy with quince jam and jelly making.

White bells. I am glad these were earlier than the bluebells, so I hope that they have not cross pollinated.
The start of the rabbit fence under way.  The wire netting still has not been delivered, so this is holding things up somewhat!  The rhubarb on the left is looking very healthy,  as is the sorrel on the right. The rabbits do not like either, but I see the slugs are slowly moving into the sorrel!!

  1. Beautiful! We have cherries in our garden in France too. Delicious - though we often miss them if we're not there at just the right time! We have some friends who put them in alcohol for us, a treat that we can have at any time of the year!

  2. Hi Kirsty, The first year we were here the cherry tree was laden. Not only did I eat and eat and eat, but I brought about 30 large bottles of cherries back to the UK for Nigel in Brandy!!

  5. Hi Joan and Mary, Back from the dentist, and for the moment the throb has gone. but it is still tender to the touch! She assures me the pain will go! BUT I have to go again 18 and 26 May as I will now have to have a nerve block (3 obvious nerves in the x-ray!!) and a crown. It is not strong enough to last without.
Hopefully I can get some work done tomorrow. Thanks for all the support. Diane

  8. Hi Becca, It was a traumatic afternoon with me fighting the desire to jump out of the dentist chair and run down the street. But I survived and I can honestly say I feel much better at the moment. It is so much harder being apart when either of us is not well. Diane

  10. The birds always beat us to the cherries. We have a large number of fruit trees, all of which appear to date back to the 1920s, and the fruit is so much better than that which is available today - curse that genetic engineering! Our yard is 10 acres, sufficient for the kids and dog to do whatever they like!

As for your slugs, spread used coffee grounds around the plants they're attacking. They eat the coffee and OD on the caffeine. It really works - I did it with my lettuce last summer, when we had a real infestation because it was chilly and damp all year.

Hope you get tooth relief soon!

  12. Hi Marjie, My cherry tree is also very old and is simply laden when the weather is right. The newer tree is not as good! There even seems to be too many cherries for the birds though and there are more than enough for me as well.

Re the slugs, I will have to speak to my neighbours as I don't normally drink coffee. About 6 cups a year is about as far as I get and that is when we are out. Thanks for the idea though. Diane

  15. I love my garden Pam and I normally enjoy working in it. My tooth is still not right, though easier than it was. I find it difficult to concentrate on anything at the moment.
