Turkey Wings

Turkey Wings.

The other day, while out shopping, I saw a rare sight -  packets of turkey wings, and on special offer!  They were all trimmed, and only the thickest part of the wing was in the packet; 10 pieces in all and with the promise of lots of economical meals! Furthermore, I thought that it would be a good opportunity to try something new.

Ingredients
Turkey wings (I had 10)
Oil
Freshly ground black pepper
Garlic salt
Barbecue seasoning
1 Large onion
1 Red or green pepper
1 Small chilli
A little butter for sauteeing
5 tblesp Tomato sauce
Dash of Tabasco sauce
1 garlic clove (or more according to taste)
1 teasp oregano
Salt and pepper to taste

I put the wings into an oven pan with a light coating of olive oil, and sprinkled both sides with pepper, garlic salt and some barbecue seasoning.  Popped them into the oven at 180˚C (356˚F) for about 45 mins.

Meanwhile I chopped the onion, pepper and chilli,  sautéed them in a little butter until just soft.  I added the tomato sauce and tabasco, cooked for a few minutes longer until just boiling.  I then added the crushed garlic clove, some salt and pepper to taste and a teaspoon of oregano.  I cooked it for a few more minutes, then switched off the heat.

I took the wings out of the oven at 45 mins and smothered the sauce over them; the dish then went back into the oven until the sauce had browned slightly and was bubbling well, about another 30 minutes.

Serve with vegetables of your choice; spiced rice works well.  The meal was delicious and I will certainly keep an eye out for turkey wings when I next go shopping; they were not expensive and the big wings contain a lot of meat. Enjoy!

I apologise for the poor quality photos, but I almost forgot to take them....... all a bit of a rush, as the cooking seemed to take priority!!

  1. They look great Diane. In all our time in France, I don't think I saw turkey wings once! You were lucky to find them.

  3. I'm with you, don't really see them in the store.. but they are favorites on Thanksgiving.. love getting all the little bits off the bones and the crispy skin to meat ratio is excellent..Great way to do them!

  5. Hello Diane:
What a delicious looking dish and, even better, to be so economical. The turkey wings that you used seem to be very meaty and so would have been filling, we expect.

  6. This looks like a great dish! I always buy turkey wings when I see them if they are not over 4 dollars a package. Here they only ever come in 1 wing per package cut into two pieces. On occasion they will come two wings cut into 4 pieces. Sometimes I can get them for $2.00 or less a package and I buy several. Now I have another recipe to try :-)

  9. Although I a firm believer that turkey is a once a year meat, I think I could enjoy this recipe more often!

  10. Does look and sound good, not a big turkey eater because I prefer the dark meat. Guess that's what the wings would be. ;)

  15. Deb from WhatsInMyAttic we are certainly not turkey eaters, and even at Christmas we generally go for a whole salmon rather than a turkey. Never the less this is one recipe I will go for again and at any time of the year. Diane

  18. I like the white meat on chickens or turkeys. On turkey, I will eat the meat on a leg as I think it is delicious if roasted to well done.

  48. Boye By Red, thanks for the visit to my blog and your kind comment. Our black berries here are so small due to the drought that they re not worth picking. I love picking cherries when they are in season, pick one for the bowl and two for the mouth!! We always have so many that it is not a problem, I am even happy to share them with the birds LOL.
