Round the Garden - Spring is in the Air!!

At long last, the weather seems to be warming up (it was a windless 22 C (72F) degrees yesterday!) and there are a few signs that spring is approaching.  I only hope that we do not have another cold spell.  The sun's warmth has been very welcome and we have both enjoyed the heat on our backs. We have seen the occasional early butterfly and bee, and the lizards have reappeared in the last couple of days; it is good to see them basking in the sun.
The usual avian suspects like black caps, great tits, chaffinches and goldfinches  have stayed in the garden over winter, enticed by the food we put out. The blue tits are still coming to the window sill for food, their favourite being sunflower seeds!
There are several hyacinths out, and to my delight, I now see 3 daffodils. Most of the bulbs had rotted after the snow melted in February!
A lone snowdrop hidden in the shade
The cactus seem to have survived the big freeze and they are enjoying the sunshine
The bluebells are looking healthy and I hope they will soon form a mass of blue flowers
The wild violets are happy in their patches; the top picture shows that the flies are also again in evidence!
The hydrangea, having been pruned back, is starting to shoot all over
One of my followers  told me the name of this plant some time ago, but I am afraid I have forgotten!! Can anyone out there come to my rescue?

  1. Spring sure looks on its way to you! Slowly slowly here -- but there are little signs.

  2. Hello Diane:
It is all so exciting when the temperature rises and the garden springs to life. We hope too that this will not be another false start as the cold snaps are so damaging. But, let us hope that spring is here to stay this time.

The plant you picture is Bergenia Cordifolia, an absolute stalwart of the garden from our point of view and its vibrant blooms really do make for a wonderful show!

  3. The Broad it is slow here as well. We have another good day tomorrow then it cools down again with rain which we really need. Keep well Diane

  4. Jane and Lance I have just looked at the weather report and it seems that tomorrow the weather will be good, then on Saturday we can expect storms! Rain for another couple of days, and then only around 10C for the next week. It does not though appear to be a frost for the immediate future. I have known frosts in May so we need to watch the tender new vegetables.

Thanks for the identification, as soon as I saw the name I remembered but the memory is defiantly slowing down! Keep well Diane

  5. Temperature at 24 yesterday, and gosh but it was hot! Seems hard to believe that only three weeks ago we were down in the minuses, but thank goodness for the heat. However, not wanting to tempt fate, I am still keeping my thermal vest on for a while yet.

  6. We do not have any snowdrops here, but apart from that your description is very similar to how things are around here now. Isn't it glorious, hope Spring warmth is here to stay, not sure, but hope so. We do need rain, but none forecast. Thanks for sharing your lovely photos.

  7. Hi Diane .. our plants are furiously sprouting - I rent and the garden is pretty scarce .. I look forward to your type of garden again one day.

Everything is sprouting - though we've had warm days with thick mists at night - and pretty cold. Still spring is on its way .. and I love your photos ...

    Cheers for now - Hilary

  13. Hilary I can understand not wanting to spend a lot of money on a rented garden, just a case of keeping it tidy.

I love just watching all the buds coming out, I hope soon we will have blossom. Keep well Diane

  22. Your Spring, our Autumn at the moment are the same temps. While you're experiencing growth, leaves fall from our trees in Melbourne.

  23. Here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, it is still on the cool side, but for us it is warm. It is +10C today. The long term forecast is very good. It will slowly warm up over the next month or so.

  24. Marco Pasho I so love this warm weather I am certainly someone who hates winter. After living in Zimbabwe for so long I find it hard to appreciate just how cold winter in in Europe! Yep, those lizards are certainly thinking that spring is in the air.... Keep well Diane

We just need a bit of rain as all is very dry, it is forecast for Saturday so I hope.... Diane

  27. meridith thanks for your visit and comment. It is a pity you can't feed the birds in winter. This year was particularly cold and I think they would have struggled to find food on their own. Keep well Diane

    ReplyDelete
  28. Mary it really is not that tidy, I did take some photos of the weeds but though better of it LOL. Keep well Diane

    ReplyDelete
  29. Leon and Sue it will not be long though before you are in Spring here. I am sure you are excited about the trip. We are looking forward to the chance of meeting you. Diane

  33. I just love this time of year seeing everyone's gardens come to life and it sure has come to your area. OOoohh I love that cactus - the colors are stunning. The hyancynth looks so good and full. Love the color.

    ReplyDelete
  34. )Oh wow, lucky you. I haven't seen any bloom in my garden yet. My cactus died unfortunately.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I can't wait to get out and putter away in the garden. Unfortunately, we're having late winter storms, wet and windy for days, possible snow storms and flooding. Whatever is blooming will be destroyed by the winds.

    Oh well!
It was great seeing your spring blooms.

  36. It's wonderful to see the spring after a long, cold winter. Sadly we are not yet there but soon I hope. We have more rain in the forecast and temperatures are still coolish at times. In fact, we had a bit more snow yesterday! It didn't stay on the ground where I live. Thankfully!

  37. Your garden really is starting to come to life and looking good.
I have always known that last plant as 'London's Pride' but I could be wrong!! Thanks for sharing, you have insprired me to get out in the garden with the camera.Thank you. xx

  38. Boye by Red, there are not too many but the little bit of colour makes such a difference. Keep well Diane

    ReplyDelete
  39. Marjie we seem to be behind the UK surprisingly enough as we are usually warmer. It looks like next week is dropping in temperature again though! Diane

    ReplyDelete
  40. Becca having a little colour in the garden makes such a difference :-) The picture does not show the hyacinth at its best, it is a very bright blue. Take care Diane

    ReplyDelete
  41. chubskulit I am so happy to see the colour back in the garden, it has been very grey through February. We have in fact had a short winter but it was exceptionally bad when it arrived! Diane

    ReplyDelete
  42. rosaria, storms are predicted here tomorrow so I hope they do not do any dammage. We need rain as it is very dry but I hope that the sun will soon be back again so I can spend more time in the garden. Diane

    ReplyDelete
  43. Joyful you are further North than we are so I guess your winter is a bit longer than ours. Sure you will soon have spring there as well. Keep well. Diane

    ReplyDelete
  44. What lovely photos - real confirmation that spring has arrived. Even here in Derbyshire we have had some warm sunshine - in fact we ate lunch outdoors last Sunday - when we get a nice day we just have to make the most of it !!

There's always the chance that winter will return briefly to have its last laugh but as each week goes by and the days lengthen it's unlikely to stick around for long now.

  45. Karen thanks for your comment, I have just looked up London's pride and the leaf is slightly different, Saxifraga x urbium. Alternative names for it include St. Patrick's Cabbage, Whimsey, Prattling Parnell, and Look Up And Kiss Me.
Bergenia Cordifolia is spot on for my plant when I look at the photos.
I am so happy to see colour back in the garden :-) Diane

  46. Jean I cannot tell you how happy I am to feel a bit of warmth from the sun, I am sure that you know though.

We also have the first day when the temperature got to twenty degrees. In your climate in France is milder and spring earlier. Thank you for your nice comment. I send many greetings! Peter.

Hope you both are much better..always thinking about you and wishing for the best of health..
    Have a good weekend..xoCarolyn

  52. I think the only possible good thing about a warming climate is the decreased chance of those awful cold snaps that wipe things out. My worst took out all my gorgeous casablanca lilies ... just when the stalks were at their most delicate when they just get out of the ground. I had no lilies that year and they never really recovered. Heartbreaking. Here's crossed fingers your garden grows without a hitch.

  58. lostpastremembered our winter this year was the coldest since the early 50's and I think I have lost several plants. I am just keeping my fingers crossed. Very sad about your lilies the same thing happened to me one winter in S.Africa with a whole bed of spider lilies, I was heart broken. Diane

  61. Your rabbit recipe is close to the one I used to cook. After placing the pieces of rabbit in a heavy casserole I poured some cognac on it and then placed a match to light it and get rid of the alcohol, just to keep the flavor. Then I poured a little bit of flour on the pieces so the gravy would get thicker. I also added the cut up potatoes half hour before the rabbit was ready in the same pot. When using white wine instead of red I used tarragon and a bit of herbes de provence and more mushrooms and some tiny carrots instead of the potatoes. Your spring flowers are pretty – I love the hyacinths – my mother used to always buy me a pot of hyacinth for my birthday so I’ll need to get one in another week.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yep! spring is definitively here!
    Beautiful and colourful flowers!
you be happy and proud of the result!

  95. Happy Easter to you and Nigel. Isn't Spring wonderful, it is so good to feel that warmth from the sun on your face :) though I cannot complain, we have had such a mild winter here in Ireland. The mildest since I moved here in 2006. I love your flower photographs. X

    ReplyDelete
  96. Thanks Dolly and I hope that you have had a peaceful and blessed Easter. Our winter though shortish was one of the worst since the 50's so we really felt it. I think I have lost a couple of shrubs but I will just have to replant. The weather has cooled down a little again at the moment but hopefully it will soon warm up properly! Keep well Diane x
