August Around the Garden Part 2

I have not really got many flower beds, but what there are, appear to produce some amazing blooms.  The seeds are mostly out of cheap mixed packets, so I have not got a clue what I am growing, even after they flower, as I have insufficient knowledge to be able to identify them!!  Here is a selection of some.
A mixed selection

Perhaps one of you out there can tell me what this beautiful specimen is
Linda and Sheila both think that this is a marigold, so I will happily go with their thoughts. Thanks to both of you.

Zinnia

Mixed Zinnias, Pink cornflower to the right.

Cosmos, see header photo also

Hydrangea

I think that this is Love lies Bleeding

My favourite rose with the best perfume ever. I tried to find out what its name is from the local nursery, but I was told that I would need to take a flower to the Royal Horticultural Society to find out.  That means I will never discover its name!!!

This is not the "normal" sunflower; not only is the seed a completely different shape to the norm, but there are about 15 branches on this plant and each branch has up to to 8 or 9 flowers or buds. It is at least 2,5 metres tall or 8 to 9 feet.  It smiles in many ways every day at me!

and a few interesting bugs -

finally this pretty little specimen
I looked in my book, but gave up on the identification.
Noushka help please!!
Noushka says "it is a bug larva! They all look quite alike at this stage and it will have to go through 1 or 2 more moults! I'll see tomorrow if I can be more accurate!"
Further from Noushka :- I think it is a Shield bug larva, going by the of Carpocoris purpureipennis!   If that helps!
See here, mid-page:http://aramel.free.fr/INSECTES10bisbis-01.shtml Aramel is good place to start looking for ID's.   Otherwise, you can find links to all sorts of "reference website" on my blog!

  1. Hello Diane:
What a cornucopia of delight your garden is as summer draws to a close. We love Sunflowers, such cheery blooms and although the fields in Hungary have been filled with them, they are all now brown and ready to made into oil. Yours look splendid!

  3. What a lovely selection of pictures. Your flowers are beautiful, I'm afraid I'm not very good at naming them I just know when I like a nice flower lol. Some unusual bugs in there as well. Your garden must be looking great with all that colour.

  6. Thanks Brittany, there is a lot of colour in the garden thanks to the mixed seed packets :-) Diane

  7. Jane and Lance what I love about these sunflowers is, although there are several heads drying off, there are also some in flower and still masses of bud. These are just fantastic. I will be collecting plenty of seed :-) Diane

  8. Sonia thanks for the comment, I would like to be able to name everything in the garden, but as long as there is colour and beauty in the garden I am happy. Diane

    ReplyDelete
  9. Ellie I have to agree, as long as the colour and beauty is there and I can collect seed for next year, does it matter if I don't know what they are :-) Take care Diane

  10. Dzoli, I am very happy with the garden this year. A bit wild looking, but the bees, bugs and butterflies seem to love it which is important. Diane

  11. Leon and Sue, if only you saw how many I take to get a fairly good one LOL. I still have the cheap supermarket special which generally is just used on auto!! Bonne weekend. Diane

  12. Your garden is full of glorious colour and interesting insects! The unnamed flower may be a member of the marigold family but I am not sure as unable to see the leaves clearly.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Craig you are so right about the sunflower I love it. It has been flowing for weeks now and there are still many, many buds. Zinnias seem to last for ever as does the Love Lies Bleeding, so they are good options. Have a good weekend Diane

  14. Linda you may be right, but the leaves are nothing like the normal marigold and it is a far nicer perfume. I am not sure now which plant it was on and there are no more out at present. All the plants though in that area have similar leaves, long and not very wide. If another comes out, I will take a photo of the leaves as well. Thanks for the interest. Diane

  15. Diane, Your photos are so colorful and vivid. Even the bug is pretty. The yellow flower does look like a double marigold but also resembles an aster. Interesting.

  16. Do you do those with a tripod??? I can't believe how perfect they are. PS I try to get the most ethically raised foie I can... but I do have reservations about it and don't eat it often. Will be trying non gavage goose foie soon... will let you know how it tastes... they just let them pig out!

  20. Great photos! I especially love the shot of your favorite rose.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Judy looking at photos of double marigolds and photos of asters, I think aster is more likely but I am anything but convinced. The colour printer is packed or I would print it off and ask at the nursery. Thanks for the input. Diane

  22. Your flower garden is beautiful, no matter what they're called.

  23. lostpastremembered, I own a tripod but don't ask me where it is, either the UK of France!!!!! I have not used a tripod since I have been here. Steady hand (sometimes) I guess.
I will never get to eat Foie gras me thinks LOL. Diane

  24. Thanks Graham, I love taking the insects but I have to take many to get one right. A cheap supermarket camera has its disadvantages :-( One day I wil win that lottery then a good camera and a trip to Nam is on the list LOL. Have a good weekend Diane

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ola I also love sunflowers they always make me smile. Keep well. Diane

    ReplyDelete
  26. Liesl, I would love to go to the nursery without worrying about how much I spent, it is never likely to happen though. I am saving seeds like mad to save money for next year!!! Keep well Diane

    ReplyDelete
  27. Pam I must take some more cuttings of that rose as I really love it. Have a good weekend. Diane

  28. Great photos!
I have little time tonight!, but it is a bug larva! They all look quite alike at this stage and it will have to go through 1 or 2 more moults!
I'll see tomorrow if I can be ore accurate!
    Love and good evening, Dine!

  34. Diane, your garden is so beautiful. It must be lovely to sit in your garden on a sunny day with a cup of coffee and a book in hand. I would enjoy that very much.

Interestingly, my aunt just gave me the seeds for Cosmos flowers. I can't wait to grow them next summer. I hope they grow as well as yours.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ha ha Karen, maybe I have got some angels around here helping me out. Sometimes I think my neighbours are angels, they have been so good to me as I am mostly on my own. Of course you only see the good blooms :-) Diane

  46. So pretty§ And I had to laugh - I never know the names of my flowers either!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Love all of the pretty pretty flowers =)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm pretty sure your mystery
    flower is an English marigold.
As opposed to the French variety
which have that unique aroma and
which come in a variety of sizes
and tones of yellow and bronze.
I bet the leaves of your plant
are somewhat sticky to the touch.

Love that one little bee who is so
    laden with pollen...must have been
    difficult to get airborne.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Randomness is good....love it when things pop up unexpected flower heads, and can't stand organised flower beds as they look too artificial to my eyes. Lovely photos as per usual Diane.

  52. Ok!
I think it is a Shield bug larva, going by the of Carpocoris purpureipennis!

  59. Fantastic selection of flower shots. The wasp on the red flower is my favourite. I can't believe autumn will start in less than 20 days... And then, winter! Grrrr... :-)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Sheila thanks so much for your comment and information, it seems then that Linda was right. As I am not sure which plant it was on, I have no idea if the leaves are sticky or not and I have not seen another flower, very annoying!! When back in the UK I will have a look at the English marigold seeds and possibly buy some to prove a point. Many thanks, much appreciated. Diane

  61. Vera my flower beds are very random but I also love them like that. The mixed seed packets are so cheap (€0.26) and produce some wonderful surprises. Take care Diane

  62. Quay Po Cooks, I think it is just magical packets of seed, but this year seems to have been exceptional despite the drought. I did have to help a bit though LOL. Diane

  69. Hi Mary Mum's Kitchen. Glad you had such a great trip. It is odd, all the different countries I have lived in, and I never thought I would ever leave Africa, I feel more at home in France, where I cannot even speak the language,(!) than I have anywhere else. I am still trying with my French but my memory is rubbish. Keep well Diane

  88. I love your morning glories Diane, mine is like burgundy. The love lies bleeding fascinates me.. Do you use seeds to plant those?

    ReplyDelete
  89. chubskulit, they must have grown from seeds as all my flowers came from a mixed packet of flower seeds! Diane

    ReplyDelete
  90. Dear Diane! Y would never know the name of many of my flowers either, so I decided I will just enjoy them.

I have a problem with my roses, they are really pretty, I love them, but they have no perfume at all, I will guess this is due to all the seeds manipulation that is done. So my question is : How do I get perfumed roses again? any idea?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Pamela. a French lady who lives up the road from us,says the only roses in her garden that have a good perfume are ones that she has been given from England! I guess if you go to a nursery and ask for perfumed roses they must have some :-) I was given a whole bunch for my birthday but not even the slightest smell it is very sad! Diane

  92. Your gardens are stunning right now. Ooohhh how I love that rose. Love the various colors on the zinnias.
