Frairie - Chasseneuil-sur-Bonnieure, Day one.

May 8, 1945, Victory Day (VE day WWII)  was celebrated in many ways around France this past weekend.  Wreaths were laid at memorials and there were some  serious moments  of reflection on this terrible conflict.
Chasseneuil also celebrates each year, the opening 7 years ago of their town bypass, and this now carries the thousands of heavy lorries each day which used to use the old N141 main road from Limoges to Angouleme, which passes  straight through the centre of the small town; I gather it was a nightmare to go shopping there. We were lucky that the bypass had just been finished when we moved here.  To celebrate, they close off the road through the centre of town and for two days they  set out market stalls with food, wine, exhibitions and a fun fair.

French sausages and chips for anyone?
Foot weary? Then how about trying a new pair of shoes?
These axes and knives looked a bit vicious,
but I thought that these two little mugs I saw on a stall were quite cute!
Anyone for a handbag?
or perhaps a plant
or two.
I was a bit late and the vegetable store was already looking  rather empty!
Can you just imagine what this little road was like when it had massive trucks travelling through it in both directions?
I was interested in this home made jewellery but it was just a little bit too expensive I thought.  When I make mine I will keep the prices a bit lower!
I loved these flower pot men
I never did fathom out what you had to do for €2 to win one of these lovely toys!
The children (and the grown-ups!) were having great fun in the bumper cars.

The dinosaur slide seemed to be attracting some attention
Meanwhile the very little ones were having fun under the watchful eye of Mum and Dad.

Day Two, to follow has a great collection of very old cars.

  1. Can't imagine huge trucks going through that tiny space! I love the bumper cars,I would have been on those the whole day!!

  2. We love markets like these - they are always so colourful with a great atmosphere.
I thought Chasseneuil was a lovely place when we drove through - it must have been awful with huge lorries thundering through.

  3. Wow...lots of fun stuff to shop for. The plants are really beautiful and the fruit stand looks almost empty and seems like you baged them all before taking the picture :D

  4. Leisl it must have been a nightmare as it really is through the centre of the village. I can't imagine that the shop owners could hear a thing for the noise!! I cannot remember the last time I went in a bumper car..... it always used to be great fun though. Diane

  5. Jean my neighbour said he never used to go there shopping as it was so dangerous! They have only in the last few months opened the bypass to La Rochefoucauld. Although that did not quite go through the centre it certainly was a pain to go there. Constant trucks, noise and chaos. I cycled there today, and even with it being market day it was still a pleasure. Not a truck in site.
I agree the fairs and markets are such fun, I have never seen anything quite like this in the UK.

  7. Rue en fete - Street of festival or something similar (high school French was decades ago....) - anyway, it sounds like fun! Yes, I need a handbag, and flowers, and whatever else they're selling. It's fortunate they built the bypass indeed!

  17. It was about this time 2008 we saw the placing of flowers in the square of a small village in the Dordogne for V-Day as the villages filed into church. A day or so later it was market and brocante day in Le Bugue. Your post reminded us and we'll blog it in a few weeks on Wed in France.
Hope you're enjoying summer - its grey outside as I write this.

  24. Looks like a good family day out.

I love markets, and apart from the usual stalls selling local produce, like to look for something out of the ordinary from small stalls.

  28. Leon and Sue I am enjoying summer but we need rain so badly, it is very serious. I gather it has not been this dry in over a hundred years. We have a huge cedar tree at the bottom of our garden which sadly looks like it has died. Happy cycling, Diane

  34. Ann N, I am glad the bypass was finished just before we arrived it must have been horrific with trucks going both ways. La Rochefoucauld have only just got their bypass and when I cycled in there yesterday I realised just how pleasant it is now with the trucks out of the town. Take care. Diane

  39. Diane I think this post qualifies as one of my favourites of all your wonderful posts. It makes me want to pack right now and head over. But in the meantime, it was great fun to visit the market with you. Hurrah for bypasses wherever they might be. I don't drive a car, don't know how, don't want to learn. So it is lovely to see a small town return to a quiet, simpler way of life.
