Au revoir au prunier et bonjour aux chats.

Over the weekend, I finally managed to cut away most of the remaining plum tree roots above ground level and fill in the hole.  The earth filling will settle, of course, but next year we can carry out final levelling and plant some grass in the spring. There is little point in  planting grass with winter approaching.  One more job is out of the way, but plans for removal of the fir tree roots are on hold at present, pending arrival of someone's excavator!!

Meanwhile David and family went on holiday yesterday, so I am looking after their house, garden and two cats.  I spent an hour there this morning but only found one cat!  This really worries me, but I am quite sure the other one is hidden away in either the adjoining forest or field of sunflowers!!  Bet he is just laughing at me or sulking because the owners have left him behind, or I hope so anyway.  Strangely enough, the one which is now AWOL is the one which usually comes first when I call them.  The other one generally takes its time, but then will not let me walk anywhere as he is under my feet constantly.  Only when I put down the food did I manage to get him to move far enough away from me to take this picture.

I hope to get some photos of the other one very soon!!!!

P.S. 17 Aug.  Two cats at the house this morning:-) Phew, relief.

  1. Ah, do you have animals of your own Diane? ... I'm sure the other will appear again ... my tomcat Mutt sometimes disappears for two weeks at a time (I'm thinking he's found a second home somewhere, perhaps one with un-neutered females ...)

The title of this post made me wish I'd learned French when I was younger, it seems such a beautiful language ... alas, my knowledge of French is limited to the phrase "mon petit chou" ... which I learned from friends who retired here in Namibia from France ...

  2. Sadly Graham we have no animals since we arrived in the UK in 2002. I have always had cats, dogs and horses around me and I am still not used to the idea of not having an animal to talk to. It would not be fair on any animal with us living in two countries at the moment, and quite honestly I don't think we could afford it. Vets are not cheap over here!!!!

I know cats are very independant but I am still worried, tomorrow I hope there will be two cats there:)

French is a beautiful language, I never got to grips with Afrikaans and I an struggling with French, but I enjoy the language which helps. It is soft, flowing and romantic. Au revoir, Diane

  4. How worrying for you. Looking after someone elses animals is a big responsibility as we well know when we looked after our neighbour's camel farm! Hope the cat turns up soon. Great job with tree stump. I probably would have left it as an architectural garden structure!

  5. You have heard of 'when the cats away, the mice will play'? So now maybe it is the cats turn without the owners there. :)

  8. Vera there was little architecture in that structure!
Camel farming - that must have been interesting:) It is a responsibility though, and it far more worrying when it is someone else's animal than your own. I ended up doing 3 trips there yesterday but no cat. The family have moved to the next hamlet and although it is not far, it is not as easy as when they lived opposite! Diane

  11. I'm sure the other one will turn up...cat's can be funny wee buggers when their owners are away (We have two and I am reliably informed that they have a personality switch when we're away...the brave one becoming scared and vice versa!)

  13. Carol I am happy to say the second one appeared this morning. I have to say he did not come when called, but when I went into the house to feed them he was asleep on the table. Think maybe he had a heavy night:) Diane

  24. Glad you have both cats on site today. Even when you can't do much about the roamings of cats, you still feel responsible.

I hope you will have some time to relax before you return to the UK.

  26. Mya there will not be much relaxation. There is always something to do here in the garden or the house. Also of course there is David's house as well at the moment and the cats to keep an eye on. The day David returns I have visitors arriving for 10 days! Diane
